Session III is underway. In response to news of a brand new CANINE VIRUS/FLU that began in FL & GA 6 weeks ago, ADTC Members are in touch with contacts all over the southeastern states, doing our best to keep abreast of potential spreading. There have been no outbreaks locally and we have not heard of any outbreaks anywhere close to us. However, we are being very cautious in order to protect the dogs currenty training at our facility. We posted informational signs at our facility and messages expressing our concern about the spread of this dangerous disease. If caught early, it can be treated successfully, but dogs have been lost to this virus w/ owners thinking the intestinal upset is caused by something their pet ate. If your dog displays any unusual symptoms, please do not wait, have them checked by their Vet asap. In response to this very real threat, a group of our Members have done a preventative cleaning of our facility, using products that should kill any germs. We have cleaned the entire building, including floor, crates, chairs and any other surface that might contain any germs. We are still holding classes, but please use your own good judgement as to whether your dog should attend during this possible crisis. Please check back here on our website, where we will do our best to report any incidences of this disease. Upcoming Events (that may or may not be canceled) : Nosework Seminars 6/17/17, Session IV begins 7/31/17, & Show 'n' Go planned for August. Interested? Please visit the link for each activity and contact us with any questions.

S.T.A.R. Puppy Certification

ADTC has celebrated many Sessions of offering the AKC’s S.T.A.R. Program in our Puppy & Beginner Obedience Classes, where Owners learn to train their Pups to be Stars!

In 2009, ADTC began administering the new American Kennel Club® (AKC) training program geared towards puppies and their owners. The AKC Puppy Program rewards responsible owners who take the time to train and socialize their new puppies. The program is the puppy level of the AKC’s well-known Canine Good Citizen® program. “S.T.A.R.” stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and a Responsible owner, all of the things a puppy needs to have a good life.
“The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program teaches dogs and their owners the first important steps to becoming responsible members of the community,” said Sallie Cooper, “Young Puppy” Instructor at ADTC.

“It is our hope to diminish the number of dogs relinquished to shelters through the education offered by the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program.”

To get started, owners enroll in the “Older Puppy” Class (6 to 12 months), or the Beginner Obedience Class (if your pup is under 1 year of age by the starting date of the Session in which you choose to enroll). Classes will include valuable training tips for puppy owners – such as how to housetrain – and lessons on practical skills for puppies -such as coming when called. The program is open to all dogs. Puppies can begin training as soon as they have the necessary vaccines and they can enroll in AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy at any point up until their first birthday.

“Early training and socialization are key to having a well behaved dog,” added “Older Puppy”  Instructor Nancy Parrott. “We hope to teach owners how to start their pups off on the right paw from the very beginning.”

At the end of the training course, the Instructor will administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test. Upon passing, owners and their puppies will be eligible to send their “passing paperwork” to the AKC, plus a small fee and they will receive an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy package which includes:

A frameable certificate

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy medal

AKC Puppy Handbook

Discount enrollment in AKC Companion Animal Recovery, a 24 hour recovery service if the puppy gets lost
Subscription to monthly e-mail newsletter that includes training tips

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy graduates will be encouraged to continue working toward the next step in training, AKC’s Canine Good Citizen award. Canine Good Citizen training emphasizes responsible owners and well-mannered dogs.

We are all so proud of our young Teams! Photos to follow……
